When JEA — the largest community owned utility company in Florida — saw that its Northside Generating Station was incurring $34,000 in excess costs each month due to a more than 30 percent increase in ammonia prices, it decided to take action. As a result of the company’s efforts, JEA reduced its ammonia usage by 47 percent and produced a hard savings of $1.8 million. In this Profit through Process Interactive webcast, you’ll get to see how JEA managed to produce such staggering results — and walk away with the Best Green Process Improvement Project at IQPC’s 2010 North American Process Excellence Awards.

Genna Weiss of Six Sigma IQ speaks with Jason Lankford, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and Michael D’Avico, Senior Manager of Operations and Maintenance, from JEA. Lankford and D’Avico discuss how JEA ultimately reduced these operating costs by initiating a Six Sigma project to lower the company’s ammonia usage in its circulating fluidized bed boilers — all the while maintaining a commitment to environmental sustainability.

You will see how JEA:

• Leveraged the SIPOC diagram to initially assess the company’s ammonia flow process
• Used a root cause investigation matrix to pinpoint the problem of this process
• Implemented and maintained the solution to the problem
• Created a performance dashboard to track the company's ammonia consumption
